CARING FOR YOUR HAND-PAINTED TEXTILES
My art spans both the digital and non-digital spaces of design. I love to create with any medium I possibly can. This approach allows me to continue stretching my creativity to new bounds and learning something new.
In this expansion onto various mediums, I’ve settled my current focus on textiles. This recent work with textiles has enabled me to give art a longer life span by allowing it to be worn and used as a tool of self-expression not only for the creator but also for the recipient. Drawing on fabrics gives my illustrations new life, allowing them to move amongst us in our everyday lives as a part of who we are and what we do.
I’ve drawn and continue to draw on all the things we hold close to ourselves throughout the day. Hats, bags, shoes, jackets, jumpsuits, etc. The list continues to grow.
Folks have come to me with new garments they know they love and have a vision for adding a unique aesthetic to. While some other clients come to me with pre-loved textiles that need an artistic update to give the piece new life.
Any garment I paint is done with quality and care, by hand. Each piece is hand-painted stroke-by-stroke with custom colors I blend myself.
I offer some pre-made patterns and designs that clients love to choose from but I also love the creative process of co-creating to make new designs come to life.
The best part of it all is getting to dive deep into the meditative process of painting. I mock up my designs on the clothing for the perfect composition and then get to layering on the fabric paint.
I use Jacquard’s high-quality textile paints which adhere to natural fibers for a long-lasting finish. Once set into the fabric I let the paint sit for 2-3 days to airfix. After the natural drying period, I heat set the paint by pressing the fabric with a protective natural fabric layer between the paint and the iron surface. At that point, the paint is washable, permanent, and ready to be worn.
Upon receiving your hand-painted piece you’ll notice a By Hand hangtag telling you a bit about this behind-the-scenes process and how to care for your custom goods.
The garments last a long time when cared for in the following manner:
gently handwash or machine wash
skip the machine dryer and opt for air-drying
if pressing, remember to use the iron on the opposite side of the fabric from the paint
wear everywhere and enjoy!
